Richtext: # BADWATER: Water Contamination in The Gambia On paper, The Gambia, Africa’s smallest mainland country, with its vast underground supplies of water can easily ensure its 2.45 million people access to clean, safe water. But the reality is that cascading infrastructural and sanitation problems are resulting in an unsafe water supply for the majority of the population, creating a health crisis. But a decade later, close to 1 billion people do not have that access. CCIJ has launched H2OFAIL, an ongoing investigation into the causes and consequences of that global failure. Richtext: 1 National Water and Electricity Company borehole. NAWEC, the national water and power company, supplies piped water to the village of Gunjur. Tests on this water have registered high levels of iron and E. coli. The introduction of E. coli potentially enters the water at the treatment plant due to inadequate chlorination, into broken pipes with low water pressure or from human hands or unclean storage. The iron content comes from natural sources, but lack of effective filtering and purification by NAWEC leaves the water with above WHO acceptable levels. 2 Mohammed Lamin Touray 6yrs old in his family’s compound in Gunjur. The water his family uses for daily needs is supplied to the compound is from a NAWEC (National Water and Electricity Company) borehole. 3 Buba Bah in his garden with his wife Kumba and son Mohammedin Gunjur. The family uses untreated well water for all their household needs. The Bah family allows the neighbours to use water from their borehole when the mains water supplied by NAWEC is off. The water drawn from the Bah family's borehole is untreated. 4 Women preparing food at the Bah family compound with water drawn from an untreated borehole in their compound in Gunjur. The family uses the well as the water supply provided by NAWEC is often limited to a few hours a day due to great demand in urban areas.

Richtext: 5 Isatou Jammeh collects water from a community tap that sits directly on an open sewage drain in the densely populated village of Bakau, The Gambia, where Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) inspectors have found nitrate. Nitrate can occur due to contamination into boreholes from soakaways/pit latrines, fertilizers and animal faeces. 6 Fourteen-year-old Ya Nima Jaiteh washes her face at a tap in her family's compound in Bakau, which has been found to be contaminated by nitrates. 7 Badou Saine at the lab at the Department of Water Resources in Abuka shows water collected 01 September 2021 for analysis. It has high iron content. 8 Lab technician Badou Saine at the Department of Water Resources in Abuka, The Gambia. He demonstrates how he uses a YSI ProDSS (digital sampling system) handheld multiparameter meter to measure a variety of combinations for dissolved oxygen, turbidity, conductivity, specific conductance, salinity, resistivity, total dissolved solids (TDS), pH, ORP, pH/ORP combination, ammonium (ammonia), nitrate, chloride and temperature along with depth. 9 Soluble iron deposits picked from the surface of the ground in a mangrove forest near the village of Tanji in Gambia's West Coast Region. According to PURA, naturally occurring soluble iron is the leading cause of high levels of iron found in the water in the region.
